shortlisted!
Yeah! We are so thrilled as we just got word that Vanessa and Taryne's Circus Sweet Dessert table has been shortlisted as one of the finalists for the 2011 Sweet Table Contest. If you missed the first photo of the table - you can go check it out here. But we thought you would want to see more, lots more. So Vanessa kindly sent through a whole batch of pics but also her inspiration and ideas behind the table! I seriously think Vanessa and Taryne should give up their day jobs and become professional Sweet Table Sytlists - they could be the Amy Atlas of SA - what do you think?
THE INSPIRATION
As described by Vanessa:
I was thinking of a party for Nina say cheese's 1st birthday and then the candy table contest came along. I've always loved circus as a party theme - the whole circus experience is so festive. I kept the main colours the same as the original set (Nina Say Cheese Studio) but I decided to suspend the table for fun - playing on how the tent is held up with rope, the trapeeze etc. the rope is repeated on the cake again. The circus floor was used as a table covering- I stuck it down onto the suspended table. I also wanted to used a spot light as they do in the circus, so I brought in my old light
The poodle is another element used to tie everything together - on the floor, cup cakes, on the cake. The cake pops are pushed into a white top hat with a red band - (you can't see it too clearly). Taryne helped with the food prep and styling - I love the use of the different levels - from the small toffee apple stands to the tall glass stand with meringues.
The bunting motif is repeated too: in the drum and the round pedestal as well as under the cupcakes. I love the multi colour jelly beans with flavours like cinnamon and liquorice and I LOVE the two clowns as a welcome to the table (goodies from In Good Company, Taryne's and my own).

do you DIY?
One of the number one wedding trends over the past few years has been for brides to take matters into their own hands - quite literally and take on a few (or many as sometimes the case) craft projects. Not only does this have the advantage of saving some money but also creating the personal touch. For some great tips about "crafting for the wedding" see Bianca from Lucky No.9's post at The Pretty Blog.
And if you are looking for some lovely ideas - then look no further than this book: Handmade Weddings. It is full of no less than 50 projects that you can do. This can be bought from us here or you can stand a chance to win a copy!

ribbon revelry
Yeah! Our new ribbons are online and ready to order, and many of them are sporting the lovely new shades of cranberry red and marshmallow pink. Plus, and I hope to see lots more of it: a bright sunshine yellow.
Speaking of ribbon, there is still time to enter our Couture Corsage Competition where Nadia from Cupcake Couture designed our prize: five of her stunning corsages made with all this lovely Petersham ribbon. Here are a few of her recent lovelies that she had on show at the I HEART MARKET.

couture corsages
Nadia is the girl behind Cupcake Couture and she creates the most gorgeous ribbon boutonnière. As you know we heart ribbon, so to have it made up into a brooch is well just plain lovely. Recently Nadia cooked up a batch for us for our Easter vintage party (big reveal in next month’s GNL issue), and we decided that we would give some away as we are sure our bride-to-be readers would love some for their bridesmaids! Also be sure to check out her engagement photo shoot, and her tops tips to pull one off with style.

3. It is open to all South African residents.
4. The winner will be selected at random using random.org.
5. One email is one entry, and one email per person.

party design contest
YEAH! We won a Runner Up place in Kate Landers Event's Party Contest. *happy dance* It definitely must be our lucky month. Last month, Kate Landers challenged the world over to design a Vintage Inspired Children's Birthday Party - and the prize, Kate turns the inspiration into creation by actually making the party a reality.
Naturally, we jumped at the opportunity to give it a go, and our 1930's Vintage Sewing Class come in second. A big congratulations to Cari who won with her 1930's Tea Party for Girls with Baby Dolls. We just can't wait to see what Kate is going to put on and the best part is she is going to use some ideas from all the runners up in the party! But that is all we know and all I can say - she has sworn us all to secrecy on all of our designs...
Thanks so much Kate for a wonderful competition and looking forward to the results and the next one!
