vintage circus

One of the most popular and classic themes when it comes to kiddies must be the circus. This theme is never old and is well suited to both boys and girls. For my daughter's first birthday, we invited everyone to the Big Top and you can see all the photos and details in this month's Good Newsletter.

Plus, we really loved this real life Vintage Circus Baby Shower done by Tanya of The Candy Tree and just by studying the photos you will see there are some really great tips, especially if you are looking to throw a baby shower and on a budget:

TOP TEN BABY SHOWER BUDGET SAVING TIPS:
1. Whilst everyone loves a unique colour scheme, if you are looking to do things on a budget pick a colour scheme that you are actually likely to find party products in. So in the case of the circus it is always best to go with classic bright colour palette. You could always try then to only focus on two colours, like red and blue as far as possible but at least you don't have alienate yellow or green just in case these are the only ones available.
2. For invitations opt for a printable party collection, but go the uncustomised route for the décor items like the party circles, thank you cards, bunting etc. For the invitation, the customised route is best, but send the invitations out electronically rather than print them. You are more likely to get rsvps in quicker and the cost of the customisation will be set off against the paper, printing, postage and phone calls that would have ensued had you gone the traditional route. We really like the Circus ones from The Candy Tree and the collection that I used for Bailey's Party from Paper & Cake.

3. Host the baby shower in the afternoon, that way guests are not expecting a meal, so circus food like candy floss, doughnuts, popcorn, mini hotdogs and hamburgers will go down a treat. For cost effective savings for a small crowd buying already-made will actually save you in the end, but if you have a big guest list then definitely make your own.
4. Balloons are a must for a circus party, but remember to factor in the cost of the helium and having to transport them and this can only be done on the day of the party. A nice alternative is to make giant paper tissue poms.

5. Whilst a big fancy cake is always stunning, you will actually find that you will always be left with more than what was actually eaten. So rather opt for a smaller already-made white cake and decorate with ribbon and a cute circus animal soft toy or figurine, and add mini bunting like Tanya did. Create height by placing the cake stand on top of a round stripy hatbox. Another option which Tanya did beautifully was make a three tiered nappy cake. You could do this with either disposable or towelling nappies, as even though most will use the disposable in terms of the baby, towelling nappies are indispensable for other things like creating a make shift changing mat, to keep shoulders clean, wiping spills etc.

6. Be green, and forgo paper and plastic products as far as possible by using your white side plates and clear glasses. These can always be made "circusy" with polka dot paper napkins and retro red paper straws.
7. If you don't have cake stands, do what Tanya did and use overturned bowls and dinner plates.
8. One thing I love about this theme is that something as simple as a striped tablecloth pegged onto string and one red nose can make for a super fun photo booth!
9. For an activity and guest book in one, print out Wishes for Baby cards, and have guests fill these in. Makes for really nice keepsakes afterwards.
10. For favours, simply add some stripy sweet paper bags to your dessert tables, and encourage guests to take sweets and treats home with them.

GOOD TASTE - Menu Ideas

cupcakes on a stick!

You know how we always promote the idea of putting any food on a stick and then you are guaranteed that people will eat it! Now we know no one needs convincing when it comes to cupcakes, but this is just too cute not to share. And if this eye candy is just not enough, surely the little ribbon ties have won you over!

GOOD TIES - 101 Ways with Ribbon

not quite how to tie a bow tie

We are always looking for fun things to do with ribbon, especially as we have some many gorgeous ones in store. And the idea of combining ribbon into garlands is like two of our favourite things rolled into one!

I really like this idea of making little bow ties (in this case you could even use different scrapbooking papers) and fashion them into bow ties and then attach to ribbon or cord and create a whole curtain! Just the thing for a photo booth - especially if you are like me who thinks throwing a Little Mr. party is just too cute for words for a little boy's baby shower, baptism or first birthday.

for always

Here at In Good Company, we really believe that love is in the details, and this is so beautifully portrayed by these new Bridal Bouquet text tiles that we just had commissioned for us by Paloma's Nest.

The Bridal Bouquet Text Tile is handcrafted of white porcelain clay and features a sun burst design, with the text FOR ALWAYS (no date as pictured). The tiny treasure (measuring 2.25cm wide to 5cm long) arrives with a long length of silky blue cord for securing to the flower stems- either at the bottom, or nestled in amongst the blossoms. After the wedding, the piece can be displayed as a decorative ornament on the holiday tree or alongside the couples’ wedding portrait.

This makes an extra special gift for the bride at her bridal shower, especially if received from a loved one or close friend.

fancy flowers

How pretty is this? Just spotted it over at Ideas Magazine and thought it just the thing for a spring table - and you can finally put to use all those remnants of ribbon that you most likely have stuffed in a drawer like me.

GOOD RIDDANCE - Recycle, Reuse, Renew

fabric party bags

Nowadays, it seems that sometimes paper products cost just as much as fabric goodies. Like I really love these fabric party bags that we have - they are just lovely, and the best part besides their price is that these can be repurposed in so many different ways:
- Use instead of paper or plastic lunch bags
- Wash and reuse as a small gift bag instead of wrapping paper or cardboard gift boxes
- Fill with lavender and other pou pourri, stitched closed and place in a drawer or cupboard
- Place an invitation inside instead of using a paper envelope and stitch closed for hand delivery.

Can you think of any other ideas?

good cheer

I know it may be a bit premature, especially with Christmas still being three months away, but I thought you might enjoy just a little sneak peek of Christmas Gift Guide coming out real soon, plus we are wrapping up the second part of the Christmas Catalogue too - so lots of "good cheer" in the air at the moment. Have you started on your summer holiday or Christmas plans yet?

GOOD AS NEW

silver magic

Ever since I can remember one of my favourite stores worldwide has been Cox and Cox based in the UK. I think largely this is one of the reasons we created In Good Company, after having seen all their gorgeous products and desperately seeking them in South Africa to no avail. So we blushed with pride a bit when we saw some of our items gracing their pages too - like these new silver mercury candlesticks that are ideal for for both the dining room table and living room shelf.

GOOD FORTUNE - A Little Competition

party design contest

YEAH! We won a Runner Up place in Kate Landers Event's Party Contest. *happy dance* It definitely must be our lucky month. Last month, Kate Landers challenged the world over to design a Vintage Inspired Children's Birthday Party - and the prize, Kate turns the inspiration into creation by actually making the party a reality.

Naturally, we jumped at the opportunity to give it a go, and our 1930's Vintage Sewing Class come in second. A big congratulations to Cari who won with her 1930's Tea Party for Girls with Baby Dolls. We just can't wait to see what Kate is going to put on and the best part is she is going to use some ideas from all the runners up in the party! But that is all we know and all I can say - she has sworn us all to secrecy on all of our designs...

Thanks so much Kate for a wonderful competition and looking forward to the results and the next one!

SOMETHING GOOD

how to sew a quilt

Some ideas are timeless, and whilst this one is not necessarily new, it is definitely worth a mention. This guestbook idea is a lovely idea for a baby shower. You take all different patterns of fabric and cut up into squares. Guests are then asked using fabric pens to scribe a message. All of the squares are then sewn into a quilt afterwards - a great addition to the nursery especially if done in co-ordinating colours!

slurp!

If you haven't yet caught on to the summer trend of retro stripe straws for your cocktails or drinks - then here is a heads up! Plus we just got in some new grey and white and hot pink and white, so now there is just about a colour to suit any occasion.

How cool is this makeshift lemonade stand with the jam jars used as glasses - filing this idea for future use for sure!

vintage coffee mugs

We love fresh ideas, and I love this one spotted over at the Knot as it brings back fond memories. When I got married back in 2004 my wedding favours were some plain white coffee mugs that I found at Load of Living and then I filled each one with some Nescafe cappucino mix, rock candy sugar on a stick and some Irish Coffee sweets (as a nod to my husband-to-be Liam Gallagher).

So you can imagine my joy when I say this similar idea but using a whole eclectic mix of vintage mugs, and guests get to pick their own!

GOOD TO KNOW

5 Things To Do This Heritage Day

When one lives overseas, there are a few things that you realise you took for granted when living in SA, so here are a few things that you can to do on Friday, 24th September to remember our Heritage, albeit some not that "sophisticated".

1 No matter the weather, though I am willing to bet it will be a glorious sunny day in SA, wake up and eat some warm buttered toast with Bovril! (or are you one one those Marmite people)? Also whilst, I am a BIG TIME tea person, I am not a rooibos one, but if you are, this is the perfect accompanmient.
2 Eat a boerie roll! Just typing this makes me long for one, thank goodness our German butcher down the road lived in Cape Town for a few years - so we can get our hands on the real stuff. And maybe get your hands on some milk tart! And a koeksister or two, or three...
3 Celebrate our rainbow nation and learn something new like: Can you actually sing the new National Anthem from beginning to end? How about: Do you know how to say hello in all of the 11 official languages and lastly if given a black and white flag can you colour in the right colours in the right places without peeking at one?

4 Speaking of which, why not print and cut out these little paper flags, then attach the flags to some bamboo skewers or toothpicks to create some food picks for your traditional South African meal, whether it is "pap 'n vleis" or even just some "beer and biltong"
5 Lastly, did I mention you must enjoy the sunny weather, in fact take it one step further and "rub it in". Buy a batch of South African themed post cards and write a little note to all your friends that live overseas, maybe something like "Wish you were here!" or rather "Don't you wish you were here!" Hee hee! Be sure to date it 24 September Heritage Day.

guten tag

Last week, we did a post all about how you can throw an Oktoberfest party, so whilst our family did not make it all the way to Munich, we did cross the border into Konstanz and spend the day walking around the old German town and the lake. Naturally we had to stop over some authentic German cuisine. I have to say the apple strudel alone was worth the trip!

(On a side note, last time I went to Konstanz it was quite funny because if you look at a map it is still on the Swiss side of the lake, so you can imagine my surprise when I wanted to by an apple and Swiss Francs were refused - little did I know that we were in fact in Germany and my passport was at home!)

GOOD AS NEW

show the way

Last week we shared a sneak peek of some custom wooden signs that we had made. Well, they have arrived in store and are available for hire. I love the "BAR" one and am tempted to set up a "makeshift" bar in my house so I can seat it alongside. Can't wait to put these goodies into action!

birds and nests

One of our most popular themes this year is "Birds and Nests" and it is easy to see why as it is equally fitting to a baby shower as it is to a bridal shower - or any occasion for that matter. So naturally, we were delighted when our new Cavallini & Co. goodies arrived last week, and part of the collection included these Bird and Nests stickers.

And if you are looking for inspiration what do with these, then look no further than one of my favourite daily reads: Herz Allerliebst - here Nadine did a gorgeous job of making a wishing tree and a framed picture which would be ideal for an escort card table.
