One of the first questions I ask anyone organising a party is do you have a theme? I know often this is a bit off putting as this concept is associated with a kiddies birthday party. So my second question is usually, have you thought about colours?
A great method to use is similar to that put into practice when choosing paint colours for a room. It is recommended that you choose three colours:
First colour: This is your main wedding colour and takes centre stage as it will feature 70% of the time: the paper for the stationery, table linen and tableware, often the bride's and grooms attire. When selecting this colour be sensitive to your venue, this colour should complement the room's floors, walls and other decor.
Before following your heart on this colour choice - use your head, unique or very specific colours should be reserved for your second colour choice and rather opt for something that forms a good base and is readily available: typical a colour that you would paint a room: whites, neutrals, browns, greys etc.
Second colour: This colour will pretty much be your signature colour and take up 30% of the eye candy, it can either be a darker version of your main colour if for example you want your wedding to follow a palette of tones of one colour, or this where you would select the colour that you want everyone to associate your wedding with - this is the colour you love! You will most likely feature this in your wedding motif/printing on the stationery, bridesmaid dresses and groomsmen accessories, flowers and other decorations and the cake.
Third colour: This colour is your life saver, as you only need to use this colour 10% of the time, it is reserved for those items that you want to make a real feature of or find yourself desperate as you love a specific rare colour but most things are not an exact colour match. And even though this colour is used sparingly it is perfectly suited to bright colours especially a contrasting colour to your second choice. Have fun with this colour by looking to have it for your ribbon, in your flowers but on a smaller scale or even your wedding shoes! For the all neutral bride, this is where you would select between silverware, goldware, glassware, ceramicware or wooden elements for items like the candlelabra, cutlery, vases/urns and even chargers and tableware etc.
Lastly, don't feel that these rules are hard and vast, you can always just thrown caution to the wind and go for a whole rainbow of colours with a good solid white base.
