I am a firm believer when it rains it pours - and this past week and coming week I am sure is going to be the same... We have been busy doing lots and lots of NEW! things hence the reason our little blog has been quiet. So here are some highlights and some things that you can look forward to:

- WELCOME to Eileen and Laurene! Two new lovely sales assistants started this month - wishing you both all the best. We will be sure to post a bit about them in the future.

- UNDER CONSTRUCTION Our shop is open as usual but we are doing a bit of renovations at the back, so there my be a little bit of dust especially tomorrow as we make space for a bigger and better Hire Room.

- SAY CHEESE We had so much fun doing an Autumn wedding photo shoot for Wedding Inspirations Magazine on Tuesday with the very talented Vanessa Lewis and thank goodness it didn't rain on Wednesday as we did an Easter shoot for Food & Home and whilst I can not share too many details let us just say that a certain Tangerine Tango Bunny made an appearance!

- MINI BREAK I went to CT for two days this week, stayed in the very cool "Grand Daddy Hotel" and pretty much went everywhere in two days scouting out possible future premises for our CT store. Still need to do lots of research but I am seriously tempted to buy a little Nissan Micra - we had so much fun in it!

- NEW! Stock arrived late Friday afternoon, we received over 30 boxes of new goodies and are still unpacking! Here is a little sneak peek...

And this week is even going to be just as much fun!

GOOD ADVICE - Table Centrepieces

One of the most important aspects of a party are the centrepieces, and unfortunately they also seem to take up a big chunk of the budget. Here are a few tips that I find helpful when planning them:

1 - Multiply

Instead of having one large centrepiece (like one big flower arrangement) consider rather having a "collection" of items (lots of little arrangements in small vessels). This has the advantage of having to use less blooms and you are more likely not to need a professional to do the arranging.

2 - Think Outside the Box

It is very trendy at the moment to incorporate other elements into your arrangements, so not just the typical bowl of blooms. Think about incorporating potted flowers, crates, shells, feathers, candles, props that suit the theme, wooden/metal letters, framed pictures/table numbers and I love this idea of using biscuit tins!

3 - Make a Difference

I love this trend that is Amy's signature look, don't have all your arrangements the same. Decide on three different ideas but all with the same style and colours. The advantage of this is that you you are more likely to find enough of each of the varied elements instead of trying to get everything matchy match.

4 - Double Duty

One of the "saddest" things I see at weddings are all of those beautiful flower arrangements left to wilt at the end of the party. Make a point of leaving a little note card at each guest's place setting who you wish to take home the arrangement (this is a great way to thank guests who helped with your function). The advantage of having lots of little arrangements is that these can be your favours for all your guests.

5 - Edible Displays

Consider "beefing" up your centrepiece by adding little extras that are actually edible. Even the most traditional table setting could do with a little bowl of after dinner mints. If it is a casual event consider fresh fruit, vegetables or a jar of bread sticks. And for an afternoon tea fill tiered tea trays with the menu of sandwiches and cupcakes and place a few blooms in between.

Celebrate Chinese New Year on 23rd January, Monday Night and welcome in the Year of the Dragon with family and friends. Host a themed get-together full of Eastern promise to wave goodbye to the past year’s evil spirits and to wish each other luck, health and happiness for the new one. Such a theme is really easy and inexpensive to pull off - here are our top tips.

5 QUICK IDEAS

1. Adorn your party room with colourful Chinese paper lanterns.

2. The Dragon’s associated colour is traditionally gold so use gold accents on the table: candles, vases, charger plates, cutlery or napkin rings. Don’t have these? Consider getting a can of gold spray paint and make some from something old in your garage or storeroom.

3. Give a nod to the East with your choice of party food and order from your local Chinese Take-away. place bowls of prawn or rice crackers around the room for pre dinner snacks. For dinner, serve some spicy vegetable noodles or rice in individual takeaway-style boxes, with chopsticks and have different bowls of sweet and sour pork, dumplings and g for guests to pick and choose from.

4. Be sure to pick up up some fortune cookies to share to see what the Year of the Dragon has in store for everyone.

5. Buy some Chinese paper fans to decorate empty spaces on your table or corners of your room, and then give these to guests as party favours afterwards.

So Vanessa kindly sent through a whole batch of pics but also her inspiration and ideas behind the table! I seriously think Vanessa and Taryne should give up their day jobs and become professional Sweet Table Sytlists - they could be the Amy Atlas of SA - what do you think?

THE INSPIRATION

As described by Vanessa:

I was thinking of a party for Nina say cheese's 1st birthday and then the candy table contest came along. I've always loved circus as a party theme - the whole circus experience is so festive. I kept the main colours the same as the original set (Nina Say Cheese Studio) but I decided to suspend the table for fun - playing on how the tent is held up with rope, the trapeeze etc. the rope is repeated on the cake again. The circus floor was used as a table covering- I stuck it down onto the suspended table. I also wanted to used a spot light as they do in the circus, so I brought in my old light

The poodle is another element used to tie everything together - on the floor, cup cakes, on the cake. The cake pops are pushed into a white top hat with a red band - (you can't see it too clearly). Taryne helped with the food prep and styling - I love the use of the different levels - from the small toffee apple stands to the tall glass stand with meringues.

The bunting motif is repeated too: in the drum and the round pedestal as well as under the cupcakes. I love the multi colour jelly beans with flavours like cinnamon and liquorice and I LOVE the two clowns as a welcome to the table (goodies from In Good Company, Taryne's and my own).

Follow Irish tradition, and have a hand fastening ritual during the ceremony, just before the rings are exchanged: Pick ribbons of varying textures and materials that match the colours of your wedding or have special significance: like the trim from your grandmother’s wedding gown. During the ceremony, stand facing each other and cross your arms in front of your bodies. Now, hold your partner’s hands so that together your arms create a figure-eight, or the symbol for infinity. 

Then have important people, maybe your best man or maid of honour, take a ribbon each and tie it around your wrists and through your hands to bind the two of you together. Have them finish with a visible knot. The officiant can then say a prayer or you can recite your vows while your hands are tied together.

How cute and clever is this idea? All you need to do is buy a pack of Woolies frozen berries and push into tall shot glasses a third of the way. Then top up the other two thirds with soft ice cream - push in some ice cream sticks or wooden bamboo teaspoons and refreeze. Also, a good idea would be to use a mild sorbet sans berries and serve as palate cleanser between courses - how fancy would that be!

The Rosie Flo colouring books evolved through hours of Roz Streeten sitting and drawing with her daughters when they were small. They gave her instructions as to what she must draw and each time she promptly obeyed.

Dresses were the most popular items demanded of Roz and Sophie (now 14) would then do the faces, arms and legs. They drew all different kinds of people; rich, poor, fat, thin, tall, short, old and young. Sasha (now 11) became obsessed with simply colouring-in.

The book ended up as a collection of dresses, some eccentric, some with a vague narrative but all of them lacked the head and limbs required to give them the character of Rosie Flo (a name made up from Sasha and Sophie's middle names). Roz was fascinated with how they both maintained such prolonged interest with this way of drawing and felt there must be other like minded girls around.

In designing the books, Roz has paid attention to all things which irritated her as a child, and then as a parent. The paper quality is thick enough to avoid showing through or damaging the picture on the next page. It is sturdy enough to withstand a few journeys without falling apart and small enough to fit in a child's hand luggage. The lines are intentionally not too thick, as this makes it look like it is only for preschool children.

The age range is between around 4 to 12 and beyond. With twelve colouring books now in the range, all on different themes and some with unusual paper stock, they have also introduced postcards, posters and a beautiful colouring fashion show to construct. They remain true to the initial interest in the encouragement of drawing and colouring and often hear that Rosie Flo isn’t just enjoyed by children, adults can’t resist joining in too.

With her husband Steve Kamlish, fellow graphic designer, they design and publish everything in-house and all of their products are printed in the UK.

The Nutcracker collection is really something special, and I actually had my husband bring it all the way from SA to CH to use it for Zara's Birthday party at school: I strung up the bunting by the Christmas tree, made some cupcakes and decorated with the little toppers and wrappers and popped one of the crackers in each kiddies' basket.

But the part that I am most "proud" of (if I say so myself) were these little felt masks that I had made by Mahalo.

The teacher at school read the Nutcracker tale at story time, and then under their Christmas tree were the little masks gift wrapped for each child, using little favour tags and a scroll telling the tale (so Mommy can re-read at home). The kids loved them so much, and they spent the rest of playtime fighting the assistant teacher dressed as the Mouse King and dancing around like Sugar Plum Fairies!
